It’s Sertoma Season!
By: Earl Blackmon
It’s Christmastime! For many of us, when we think of Christmas, we think of it as the season of giving. In many ways, it is a season for service to others. This year, I would like to share with you one of my favorite ways to fully embrace this season of giving through a charitable organization called Sertoma.
One of my most cherished activities as a leader in the community has been my involvement with this group. The name SERTOMA stands for SERvice TO MAnkind. While it functions as a national organization, the Eastern Shore Sertoma chapter focuses on giving back solely within our community. Our service is concentrated on supporting local children’s causes and charities.
At Christmastime, we sell Christmas trees to raise funds for foster children. Our goal is to generate revenue to ensure Baldwin County foster children are provided with a happy memory of Christmas during a time of uncertain transition. We even have a party where Santa comes to visit them. While it may seem small to us, I’ve seen how impactful this gesture is for children in need.
Want to help?
If you are looking for a way to give to those in need this Christmas, why not support your neighbors? I invite anyone to join us in any of these ways:
- Get your Christmas tree through Sertoma! Our tree lot is at Fastime Service Station in Daphne and 100% of the cost of your tree supports local children.
- Make a donation! We raise most of our funds through our projects, but if you already have a tree andyou still want to help local children, any donation is welcome. If you’d like to give money, please email me for directions on what to do!
I’ve heard it said that if you can’t serve, you can’t lead. If you would like to develop your leadership skills, I recommend checking out Sertoma. You can join our bi-weekly Sertoma meetings to see if this group is a good fit for you. Our group meets on Tuesdays for lunch at Bones & Barrell. Get more details from our Facebook page.
